My translation struggles

Struggles

To my dear readers,

At the beginning of July, I found out that all the advertisements on my site had been disabled because of mature content. I was in shock. Because at the time, I hadn’t translated any explicit sexual scenes yet. Everything was still PG13.

Hence, I emailed wordpress asking which part of my blog/translations was inappropriate. I wanted proof. I felt like I was innocent.

Their response was, “If their ‘crawler robots’ think my site is inappropriate, they will naturally ban all my ads.”

I was so upset.

However, I knew after Chapter 50, my novel was going to go down the dirty path, so I created a new site (theeunuch.com) purely for “The Eunuch is Pregnant”.

I thought they would reactivate my ads after this, and they did unblock my site. However, they sent me a response saying, “I cannot promise when, or if, ads will begin displaying again in the future.”

I was so depressed. What made it worse was when I found out my ad revenue amount for the month of June; I had over 115k views and they gave me $0.88.

I felt like I was scammed. And I felt so helpless.

I worked so hard and this is what I get?

It took me years to get the amount of readers/fans I have today.

I felt like I was at the mercy of everyone.

At the time, I was still waiting for adsense to approve me on my new site. I was at the mercy of them. In addition, I was at the mercy of wordads. Not only that, I was also at the mercy of readers (They may or may not read my novel. They may or may not ever donate to me.)

Maybe I will never get any ad revenue regardless of how hard I work. Maybe no one will donate to me because they don’t want to or they have no money.

I felt like I was being punished for choosing my novel. There were many translators that had advised me to choose something more mainstream. You know, the typical xianxia/wuxia.

Pick a male MC, they say.

Translate something with a harem.

Your novel is too risky. It is so niche.

What if it bombs? (I.e. Very few readers)

If you want money and views, you have to translate something else.

I knew they were looking out for me, but I still really wanted to translate “The Eunuch is Pregnant”. I had read the entire novel and it was so funny and hilarious! (Quite draggy in some parts but I will get rid of the fillers)

I decided it was worth my time and I wanted to share it with the rest of the world.

However, when I found out my ads were blocked, and that there was a chance that adsense might never approve me, I was crushed.

I literally felt like the Linkin Park song:

I tried so hard, and got so far.
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter.
I had to fall, to lose it all.
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter!

I was still going to translate the novel, but I was extremely discouraged and I just wanted to break down in tears.

Hence, I decided to start a patreon. I wanted to see if any of my fans would see enough value in my work to pledge.

As of now, I have 7 patrons. I am very very thankful to them, and this post is dedicated to them.

Thank you for loving my translations so much. Thank you for giving me light when I was surrounded in darkness.

I know I’m still very far from my goal of 100 patrons, but eventually, one day, I’ll get there.

I’m going to continue translating and making you guys proud! ❤

P.S. I will translate more soon. My right wrist is still in pain. I’ve been massaging it all day. 😛

  1. Success is the result of numerous failures. No matter how you get where you want to be only the end result counts – Google is full of stories about that. Although I can not imagine your situation and problems, after many issues with health and finances I can relate. Keep being creative!

  2. If all the translators go mainstream, what are the niche readers (like me) supposed to do? Keep up the good work.

  3. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you for all your hard work to provide such good reads. Keep up the excellent translations.

  4. I’m very thankful that you did not drop this novel in exchange for more mainstream novels. Good translated novels with frequent update schedule staring female MC are so sparse because of the stereotypical thinking that female MC are too weak, emotional and annoying so they get turned off from reading novels with female MC. Now that I think about it, this also includes anime & mangas. A question though. Why are harem stories not included in the mature content? The females in those harem are mostly copy paste of each other in the genre. Also 100% more irritating than female MC’s and more brain dead than real life women/girls.

Thanks again for continuing the translations despite the setbacks you encountered

    1. Thank you for taking the time to leave me such a long comment!! ❤️❤️ sometimes, I do doubt myself but I really love the novels I translate. Even if they aren’t the most popular novels, I still want to do them because I think they are really good. Haha! It just sucks when it comes to the $$ and views. 😥 the eunuch is pregnant is doing well though! Thanks for being a fan. 😊

  5. Yes, same here. If you want tons of readers/fans, we should really choose a very mainstream novel. That’s just how it is. But I wanted to translate these two BL novels anyway, even though at the very most I would have 1/10th (and possibly only 1/20th) of the number of fans that a mainstream novel would have.

By the way, in terms of ads, you might want to join the Amazon affiliate program. They approve everyone (almost) and they also have a CPM ad program. CPM – they per per view so even if no one clicks on the ads, you still get paid. The only downside is that they don’t have a lot of ads. What I do is I use Amazon and if Amazon advertising doesn’t have an ad at that time, it automatically uses my second tier ads (Adsense). It’s dead easy to use, just copy and paste, check the guide here – https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/help/node/topic/202116930

Adsense is my secondary ad source since Amazon pays 2x more.

With you 115,000 views, Amazon would be able to fill 12-16% of that and it’s more than $1 per 1k views. So around $17 from Amazon for 17,000 views. Then Adsense would be around $44 for the 98,000 views. Total = $61. It’s not a lot – you are better off asking for donations or using patreon.

But its way better than $0.88 from wordads!
