There once was a very wealthy merchant who had everything he wanted. He hustled day and night to achieve his financial freedom, and was quite satisfied with his result. But one day, he developed a splitting headache that wouldn’t go away. He travelled far and wide to find a cure, but none of the healers were able to get rid of his pain. The merchant was in despair.
“Oh, what good are my possessions if I must constantly suffer from this terrible headache?” he cried. The merchant decided to reward a pot of gold to the person who could cure him.
The reward attracted people from all over town. Each day, hundreds line up in hopes to cure the merchant. Sadly, all of them leave in disappointment. Just as it seemed like all hope was lost, a man named Alexander came up to the merchant and said, “Sir, your headache will disappear if you look at green coloured things.”
The merchant was skeptical but decided there was no harm in giving it a try. He looked at the closest tree outside his window and immediately felt a sense of relief. His head did not hurt as much!
“What?” That is amazing!” exclaimed the merchant. “Is this going to heal me? I need a long term solution!”
Alexander was confident and proud. “Yes, your headache will go away, but it will take a few days. I will be back in a couple of days to see how you are doing. If your headache goes away, I shall collect my reward.”
“Deal!” said the merchant.
Three days later, Alexander went to visit the merchant again. But upon his entry, he was splattered in green paint from head to toe.
Alexander was furious. “What do you think you are doing? How dare you pour paint all over me? I am here to see your master!”
The guard responded mercilessly, “How dare YOU come see my master wearing a RED robe? You’re the one who said GREEN is what helps his headache! Thou shall not pass until thou is green!!!!!!”
Alexander was horrified. He looked around his surroundings and realized that everything was green!! The walls, the floor, the furniture, the ceiling, oh my, even the guards were green!
“Are you seriously painting everything green?! That’s absurd!!”
The guard replied, “Green seems to be the only thing that has helped our master and it was YOUR suggestion. How dare you try to make us look stupid?!”
Alexander shook his head, “Your master can wear tinted green glasses! One cannot paint the world to his favour! That is ridiculous!”
Point of the story: You cannot expect the world to change for you. But you can choose to make changes on yourself.
P.S. The merchant was so impressed with Alexander, he gave him two pots of gold instead of one!
I hope you liked the story! I actually came upon this story while looking for inspirational things online. However, all the details and dialogue are created by me. I try to make it as interesting as possible. Thanks for reading! Sorry I haven’t been posting in such a long time. I have been feeling very lousy. However, I am going to aim to post every Monday (The designated day should help me stay more consistent)! Stay tuned! =D
