Don’t judge a person by the cover

wise

For this Monday, I would like to share a true story with all of you. This post is about a boy whom I used to tutor. I will call him “Richard” to keep him anonymous.

Richard is a family friend and I’ve known him all my life. I am nine years older than him, and I am also friends with his older brother. Due to our big gap in age, I have actually seen him crawl around his house in diapers.

When he was around 8, I started tutoring him because his mother had asked. Although he was only in Grade 3, Richard was already struggling a lot in school. He was diagnosed with a learning disorder as well as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). He couldn’t sit still nor pay attention in class.

It was very, very, VERY difficult to tutor Richard. We would literally read a paragraph together and I would ask him, “Okay, what is this paragraph about?”

He would reply, “I don’t know. I don’t remember.”

I was so frustrated, “HELLO!!? We just read it like less than a minute ago! How can you forget everything so fast?” Continue reading “Don’t judge a person by the cover”

Daring to Fly

Cambodia

This week’s Monday post is about my Moo Moo. Haha. She has a blog now. You can check her out here.

In a few days, my Moo Moo will be flying to Cambodia to start a new chapter of her life!!! She is actually leaving her family, friends, and loved ones to open a school/learning centre for English learners in a country where she doesn’t speak the language.

So brave, eh?

Most people are in shock. Why would you do that? Wow, that’s so risky. You’re going to leave Canada? Damnnnnnn…

But it has always been a dream of hers to start her own business. She wants to run her own thing and be in charge; rather than work for someone else.

Honestly, I’m extremely proud of her. Many people dream, but few are willing to take the risk. It takes a lot of courage to go pursue your dreams when most people are doubting your chances of success.

Why I hate the Education System

Education

This picture basically sums up why I hate our education system. However, compared to many Asian countries, Canada is already quite lax and accommodating to their students. In my opinion, though, it is not enough.

At the end of the day, there is still a curriculum we have to follow. Kids are still forced to learn certain subjects/things whether they like it or not.

In my opinion, school is important to a certain degree -learning how to read and write, basic mathematics, working together in groups, and so on. HOWEVER, I feel like the majority of the things we learn in school are irrelevant and useless to our lives once we get into the “real world”.

In addition, just because a child does poorly in school, it doesn’t mean he/she is stupid. Perhaps, he/she simply doesn’t care? The topic doesn’t interest him or her? It’s boring?

Or what if the child is just more hands on? Perhaps he/she may not be able to write down clear instructions on how to build a table, but can actually build one? What is more important?

I feel like those who are good in school = they are able to comprehend and retain a lot of information.

It is important to be able to comprehend and retain information, but that’s just one aspect of life. I hate how most people and companies mainly judge you by the papers you have.

Think and Grow Rich

Originally, I was going to write a post on, “Why I hate the Education System”. But I’ll save that for next week since the book “Think And Grow Rich” is freshly on my mind.

I’ve heard great things about the book, so I figured, why not read the book? After all, you can never be too inspired, right? 😉

Anyhow, in my opinion, the book is powerful BUT some of the chapters seemed a bit repetitive and/or unnecessary. I definitely didn’t read every word, but there are some very meaningful/deep points that intrigued me. I would like to share them with you:

1. “A quitter never wins – and a winner never quits.”

This is so simple and obvious. However, I find it so inspiring. If you want to succeed in anything, you have to keep going even when things are tough. If you quit, then you automatically lose.

This reminds me of a time when someone told me, “I never listen to quitters.”

Many times, quitters will tell you that you cannot do things because they themselves couldn’t do it. Has a winner ever told you to quit?

Why you should start an Online Business

Online business

Disclaimer: I am not writing this to promote any companies whatsoever. I am sharing some wisdom with you! Please take the time to read and digest what I have to say.

First of all, you might wonder, “Why should I start an online business? It’s so unrealistic and too much work. I am realistic and I have a real job. How likely am I going to survive off an online business?”

I’m not telling you to quit your job! Hear me out:

1. You should strive for multiple sources of income. This is a given. Why would you want to rely solely on your job? Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

There are no guarantees you can make money from an online business. But stop thinking of reasons why it can fail rather than the possibilities you could have if you do succeed!

What am I trying to prove?

I just sat in front of the computer for an hour in silence. Thinking about, what should I write? My thoughts are all over the place. I don’t even know.

I have a lot on my mind, but when I want to express it, nothing comes out.

I haven’t been feeling well lately. Most people can’t tell, because my face looks perfectly normal.

An act of kindness

Sorry my Monday post is late. 😦  For those who are waiting for the translations, I’m going to work on it after I finish this post. I have actually been very busy as well as not feeling so well due to the extreme weather in Toronto right now. The cold cracks my fingers and makes it very painful for me to type. 😥

Anyhow, for this post, I would like to talk about being kind. Honestly, living in our world, sometimes life seem so hopeless. The weak is oppressed by the strong; those with power abuses it; people are looking out for themselves. But despite all that, I believe there is good in this world.

Personal thoughts

For this Monday, I’m going to share some of my personal thoughts. Please do not take it personally because it is how I feel. By no means am I trying to target anyone.

First of all, my blog has surpassed 55000 views!!! This is amazing to me, because if it weren’t for the translations, I would have not have achieved this until many years down the road.

Before translating, I would get about a hundred views a week. Now, I get hundreds of views per day.

Although most people come for the translation and they don’t give a shit about me, it is still nice that they want to continue reading my translations.

It pushes me to want to be better.

My goal is to get more views. (That’s not my only goal, but I’m only talking about blog related things right now.)

Why?

When Kevin Won

basketball

This story is from Chicken Soup for the Soul. It touched me a lot, hence I decided to shorten it and share it with you guys. I hope you will like it.

Story is by: Janice M. Gibson (as told to her by Rev. Steve Goodier

——

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it would probably be “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. Regardless of subjects, he was usually one of the students struggling.

However, Kevin was great with people. He was always smiling and his enthusiasm for everything was contagious. Everyone enjoyed being around him.  Continue reading “When Kevin Won”
