Fear

Fear
Fear can stop us from achieving a lot.

We all have fears. Fear is that unpleasant emotion we feel when we are afraid of someone or something. It is likely to be something dangerous, painful, or threatening.

Some of the most common fears are: fear of death, fear of the unknown, fear of being alone, fear of failure, fear of losing loved ones, fear of rejection, fear of heights, and so on.

In my opinion, humans like to be in control of their emotions and destiny. However, fear takes that away from us. When we are fearful of something, we want to avoid it as much as we could because we imagine the worse case scenario. Now, of course, there are things we cannot avoid even if we wish to. Death is an example. Regardless of how much we want to avoid death, we’re all going to die one day. It’s a matter of time.

But there are things we could avoid if we choose to. For example, fear of failure. If we never strive for anything, we cannot fail, right?

Fear of losing loved one. If we never loved, then we cannot lose our loved ones, right?

Fear of rejection. If we never asked nor tried, we cannot be rejected, right?

True. But that’s not living.

If one were to live that carefully, perhaps there wouldn’t be much to be fearful of, but there also isn’t much to look forward to.

In my opinion, a great life is one that consists of a lot of great memories. Great memories will not happen naturally though. I have to create and allow it to happen. If I refuse to open the door, I will never know what is on the other side. Perhaps it is dangerous, scary, and risky; but I’m not satisfied living a life forever protected.

I want to live and experience everything. Love may hurt, but I’d rather loved than never to have felt love. Rejection is tough, but at least I have tried. Failure feels awful, but it means I have aimed and worked hard towards something.

They say, success is not a destination, but a journey. I truly believe so.

In Chinese, there is a saying that life consists of 4 flavours: sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy. I want to go through it all. We only have one shot in life, so why not give it your all? Live with no regrets.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

Note: Although fear is an unpleasant emotion, it is a vital response to physical danger. Sometimes, we have to know when it’s time to run.

  1. I’m a believer of things happen for a reason, whether the effect is caused by our own actions or whether it is coincidence. But all in all, we are control of our own action, it gets us to where we are today, it can determine our success and our failures. I guess this why we like to be in control is because it feels safe; we don’t like the unknown, we don’t like the feeling of fear that triggers the fight or flight response.

Do you think those that are happy are the ones that have “lived and experienced” what others are afraid of?

    1. Thanks for always commenting, Jennifer! I love your deep and insightful comment. =P

Umm, I read a quote on twitter that striked me really hard. “A ship is safe at the harbour, but that’s not what it’s meant for.”

I think people who have “lived and experienced” tend to be happier, but I may be biased. However, I do think amazing experiences are way more valuable than something you buy with money (Ex. an expensive purse).

  2. What another perfectly written blog post this is again, Grace! You really have a knack for capturing the meaning of something with the most concise words. 🙂 So good!

  4. Fear? hmm…..
for me it’s bad when there is too much or too few of it in a person’s emotion.

Too much and it’ll turn u into an indecisive loser in making important decisions in ure life, and then BOOM! U fukin lost many good opportunities, and then ure flooded with stupid REGRETS, like me. HAHA!

Too few and it’ll make u reckless idiot in making important decisions, and then KABLAM! U fukin made a very stupid decision that will F*cked ure life BAD.
