Wise Words

Wisdom

The material I am using for this post is based from a book called, “How to live without fear and worry” by K.Sri Dhammananda.

1. Modern life is a struggle -a struggle to gain monetary rewards, comfort and luxury. Instead of bring happiness, this lifestyle brings anxieties and stress.

When I read this line, I was slightly stunned. I’ve always known that life is not easy, but I have never really thought about why life is so hard. Is it hard because we are always trying to attain something we don’t have? Why is it so difficult to be happy with our lives? Some may blame society and the media for causing us to be so ungrateful, but stop for a second, and ask yourself, “What are you chasing after?”

Reality vs the Internet

Reality vs real life

Today, I had a sudden urge to blog about a topic that has been on my mind for quite some time. I want to write about people who compare their lives with the lives of the people they have on facebook/instagram/twitter/other social media. It’s actually quite common, I think.

The reason this issue bothers me is because people actually take it too seriously. I know for a fact, some people are envious or jealous of certain lifestyles people portray online. Sometimes, it seems like everyone has a better life than us. There are people who look so hot, who look so rich, who look so successful, who look so happy, and etc. However, you must understand that people only show you what they want you to see. For example, someone can post up a picture of a house they newly bought. You, the viewer, is probably like, “Wow. Blah blah blah bought a house! He/she must be doing so well”. (or something along those lines). BUT GUESS WHAT? It’s not always true!! You don’t see them struggling to pay the bills. For all you know, they probably can’t even afford it. A lot of the times, people buy things they cannot afford.

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year's resolution

This post is intended to give you motivation and FIRE you up!!! (If it makes you mad, I apologize in advance).

Okay, guys. 2015 is just around the corner. Most of us make New Year’s Resolutions every year, but very few of us actually stick to it. I’m going to share with you how you can make your New Year’s Resolutions come true.

1. First, decide on a goal you want to achieve. I am going to use losing weight as an example, as it is a very popular goal.
2. List 3 things that you know you can do DAILY to help you achieve your goal (Please be realistic). For example:

1. 30 burpees
2. 30 push ups
3. 30 jumping jacks

Now, I know what you’re all going to say, you’re going to say, “Uh, that’s not going to work. How is doing that going to help me lose weight? It’s never going to happen. I just know it.” But guys, listen to me. The point is, you have to do this EVERYDAY. You think it doesn’t make a difference? Let’s assume there are 30 days in a month, that would mean by the end of the month, you have have completed 900 more burpees, 900 more push ups, and 900 more jumping jacks than the person who did nothing. However, THIS IS ONLY TRUE IF YOU DO WHAT YOU SAID YOU ARE GOING TO DO.

Hospital in China

Hospital

Hey everyone! Long time no blog. If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I was in China, where I had no access to fb, instagram, YouTube, twitter, my blog, and even Google (So I’m sorry if I have not yet responded back to your msgs, I did not expect so many people to msg me while I was away).

While I was in China, I spent most of my time in the hospital. In fact, there was a period of time in which I spent 30 days without leaving the building. It was as if I was in a jail cell. I had to wear a wristband around my wrist to show my identification, and wear their hospital uniforms. My bed was #32, so I was known as “32”. Each morning at around 7:30, a lady would deliver breakfast and tell us to come out. Ex. “32! Come out and get your food!” Haha. It’s actually quite funny. (Btw, hospital food is not free. We order whatever we want *based on the menu* and pay for it with a card the night before. But since I was there for so long, I practically memorized the menu. I knew on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they would have the tasty noodles that I wanted. Haha)

The Tiny Frog

The tiny frog

This following story has been modified as I cannot remember the exact details. However, the message remains the same. Please do not take it literally as it is the message we should be focusing on.

Once, there was a little boy who lived on a farm. Each day, he would have a list of chores to complete. On this particular day, the little boy suddenly had the urge to use the washroom after milking the cows. So, he decided to leave the pail of milk outside while he went indoors to relieve himself. When he came back from the washroom, he noticed that there were frogs jumping and splashing around in his pail of milk. The little boy was furious! The frogs had spoilt his milk! He decided to seek revenge and placed all the frogs in a big pot. He was going to cook them live.

Soon, the frogs began to feel the heat and started jumping up to escape. All of them were jumping, but none of them were able to jump out of the pot. Slowly, one by one, the frogs started giving up. Soon, all of them stopped except for one. Out of the bunch, the smallest frog kept on jumping. All the other frogs were in dismay. They said,

“You’re so tiny. If we can’t jump out, there’s no way you can either. Just give up. We’re all going to die.”

“Why are you even trying? The pot is too high. It’s impossible.”

“You’re not going to make it.”

The Dreaded “D” Word

Death

A couple weeks ago, a friend called me to see how I was doing. He knows about my skin issue, but he didn’t know about my autoimmune disorder. Our conversation went a little something like this:

Me: My body can’t fight off infections.

Friend: WHAT? That’s messed up. Doesn’t that mean it can affect your organs too?

Me: Yeah..I have to be really careful.

Friend: OMG. That’s so scary. Aren’t you scared? Poor you. I never knew you were suffering so much.

Me: Yeah.. it’s very tough for me. I just want to be healthy. I never realized how lucky I was before.

Friend: Do you ever think that you might die?

Me: Uh..I try not to. I hope not! I don’t want to die yet. But I do think about death sometimes. I do get scared…

Friend: Man, I hope you get better soon.

Me: Me too.

Being Grateful

Grateful

A lot of people ask me, “Grace, how are you so happy all the time?” Well, guess what? I’m not. In fact, sometimes I am very moody, emotional, and angry. I just tend to shut off all communication when I’m in a bad mood (that’s why you don’t know! :p)

Negative emotions affect us so much more than positive emotions. It seems like we get stuck and our minds just can’t seem to see anything else. So today, I feel like I should write about things I feel grateful for.

Ask yourself

Ask yourself

Okay, I said I would post a post a week and I am super behind…sorry!! This one is based on an article my friend sent me via wechat. It is in Chinese but I decided to translate it because I want to share it with you guys. However, some of the content only make sense in Chinese, so I couldn’t translate everything. As a result, the writing might seem all over the place. Nonetheless, I really hope you find it interesting. The article is very simple but it can really make you think.

When you want to give up, ask yourself..

Dream Chaser

Dream

Hello my dear readers,

Sorry I haven’t blogged in such a long time. I haven’t been emotionally or physically well. But I’m somewhat back!? I will try to blog more consistently (perhaps at least a post a week?). 🙂

Today’s post is more like a rant.

I feel so sad, defeated, and hurt. I just really want to have a job that I am passionate about. I know money is important, but I don’t want to choose money over happiness.

Most people spend at least 1/3 of their lives working…doing something they hate. I don’t want to be like that. I want to feel like I’m doing something meaningful. But my parents are so unsupportive; especially my dad. It’s because this field is so unstable and risky. I never know when I’ll be paid –or if I’ll be paid. It really depends on whether I have clients and whether people trust me. But I don’t want that to stop me. I really want to pursue my dreams. I know most people will say it’s unrealistic and I should just accept reality and get a stable job, but it makes me so miserable. I don’t want to settle for something I don’t want.
