Hm… thoughts?

Last Monday, I didn’t write my normal Monday post. I felt bad and I wanted to write, but I didn’t feel like venting or sharing some of my personal issues.

However, I don’t want to skip my post again, so I’m going to share a bit.

If you have read my last original post My Adventures on Discord , you would know that I have found a very fun and interactive online community.

Due to my illness, I am often at home. Therefore, nowadays, I usually go on discord daily.

I really enjoy karaoke-ing and chatting with different translators and editors from all over the world. Sometimes, on voice chat, people would play guitar or piano, and a bunch of us would mute ourselves and listen. It’s like attending a concert, except you can only listen.

A few days ago, Options was playing the piano. Deceptioning made a comment.

Deceptioning: Your girlfriend will be a lucky woman (due to the fast fingers? Haha)

A bunch of people: Options is a girl!

Deceptioning: Oh…lucky guy then?

Options: Well, I do have my options (get it? Her name is Options, so she has her options! AHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA *insert the laughing crying face emoticon*)

*By the way, this was through text and we didn’t actually hear Option speak, so most of us had no idea she was a female.

But on a serious note, discord also made me learn a few things about myself and people.

If someone really wants to talk to you, he/she will make the effort to talk to you even if there are so many barriers (ex. they’re busy, different time zones, different work schedules, etc).

Can you preserve the culture once the language is lost?

Chinese stages

This week’s topic was inspired by Diu podcast. As I was listening, it really caused me to think a lot.

When Jack brought up the question, “Can you preserve the culture once the language is lost?” I was astonished. I’ve never thought about it.

There were a number of questions running through my head. For instance: Have I preserved my culture? What do I even do? What are my beliefs?

Then, I realized aside from teaching my kids how to speak Cantonese/Mandarin and read Chinese, I have nothing else I plan to carry down to my future generation (if I were to have kids in the future).

I mean, I personally don’t follow traditions unless I am forced to. The only time I pray and put incenses up for my ancestors is when I’m in China.

I’ve done things such as leaping over fire, praying and bowing in different directions of the house, as well as burning fake money to my dead ancestors.

Yet, I have no intentions of carrying on these traditions. To me, I do it out of respect for my elders and relatives. But if I were to have kids, am I going to teach them or do these kinda stuff?? The answer is no.

Your addictions are toxic

Addiction

This is a topic I have been meaning to write about since last year, but I kept putting it off.

Addiction is something we are all aware of. It’s when you’re constantly ingesting a substance or engaging in an activity that you find pleasurable. For example: drug, alcohol, gambling, shopping, gaming, and etc.

While the substance or activity itself may bring us pleasure, it is very harmful to us in the long run.

Why?

1. You lose self control. You’re no longer able to “live” without it because you’re constantly thinking or craving for it.

2. Time and money is scarce. We only have 24 hours a day. If you spend 5+ (or however long you spend) hours feeding your addiction, you will have less time to do other things, or take care of other responsibilities.

The One That Got Away

The one that got away

Since relationship is such a popular topic, I said I would blog about it once a week separate of my Monday post.

This week’s topic was suggested by my beloved Moo Moo (lol that’s her nickname). It’s a bit personal, but you guys like these type of posts. So, I guess I am sharing. Haha.

Throughout my life, I have had various men that came and left my life. (Okay, this sounds really bad. I’m honestly not a player. -_-) But I was naive and foolish back then; I didn’t hold onto them when I had the chance.

Thinking back, if I had made a difference choice back then, my life could have been totally different.

The Virtual World

Today’s blog post is inspired by the book, “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline.

My friend Dan lent me this book, and to my surprise, I actually loved it! Normally, I would never read something like this because:

  1. I don’t really like science fiction.
  2. I don’t game at all. I have no knowledge whatsoever, and never had the desire to learn.

But despite this, the book was very well written. I’m not going to tell you what it’s about (Read it for yourself if you want to find out), but something from the book triggered me to write this post.

I want to talk about the virtual world.

Recap

2015 New Year celebration

As 2015 draws to a close, I want to take the time to reflect on what I have gone through this year.

This year, I’m done quite a few things I never thought I would do.

  1. I started composing my own melody/songs (I never thought it was possible until I tried).
  2. I started blogging regularly (every Monday but I’ve been late lately *It’s 11:56PM right now*).
  3. I started creating raps (I never thought it was possible until I tried). You can read my first rap here
  4. I started translating a Chinese novel into English (I never thought I would translate a novel, especially when I’ve never actually read a book in Simplified Chinese before). It is definitely challenging, but it is not impossible. You can read my translation here
  5. I went speed dating (I never thought I would actually try something like that). It was an interesting experience. You can read about it here
  6. I went to hand out socks for the homeless. You can read about my experience here

I did a lot of things I never thought I would do. I guess I just wanted to experience newer things. I feel like most of the time, we try to convince ourselves of why we don’t want to do something because we’re afraid of failure.

My observations of men and women (In general)

Disclaimer: This is based on my experiences. There are definitely people who do not fall under what I say as well. Please do not be offended.

Throughout my years, I’ve noticed some extreme differences between guys and girls.

Here is what I have noticed about guys:

They tend to be more logical. For example: If taking Route A will get them to their destination without issues, they will continue taking Route A from now on.

Blogging Wisdom

More wisdom

Ever since I started blogging, I’ve learnt a lot. It’s quite strange because I never thought I could learn anything from recording down my thoughts on a webpage.

Here are some things that I’ve learnt from blogging:

Time – Blogging is something that takes time to grow. It’s not about how many posts you make on that one day/week. In the end, the blogs that are most successful are ones who have devoted themselves to a consistent schedule and are people who blog regularly.

A society with messed up values

Values

A couple weeks ago, I had a very interesting conversation with a friend. I was telling him that I don’t have facebook on my phone because the app is too heavy (takes up too much space) and my phone cannot handle it. Surprisingly, he told me his phone cannot handle whatsapp!

Clearly, we should get new phones.

But we are both reluctant. We both shared our reasons.
